A Front Porch, a Passing Train, and a Little Time to Slow Down

There’s a certain feeling you get when you hear a train coming before you see it.

On a quiet afternoon at Donut Joe’s, two people settle into seats on our front porch. They have nowhere they need to be for the next few minutes. Then the train rolls by, and they simply watch. For a moment, the world can wait.

 That’s one of our favorite things about this little spot in Pelham, Alabama. We’re tucked beside the railroad tracks, under a pecan tree, with a porch that invites you to sit a while. You can bring a fresh handmade donut and a cup of locally roasted coffee, listen for the train, and let the afternoon unfold at its own pace.

If you love train watching, pull up a seat. You never know when one might pass, but that’s part of the pleasure. And if trains aren’t usually your thing, you might be surprised how good it feels to pause and watch one go by.

We’ve been making donuts and serving coffee in Pelham since 2009. Neighbors from Helena, Alabaster, and Hoover stop in, and so do travelers taking a break from I‑65. Some visits are quick. Others turn into a little porch time. We like both.

Next time you’re nearby, come see us at 3199 Lee St., Pelham, AL, just off I‑65 Exit 242—the tank exit. Pick out a donut, grab your coffee, and find a spot on the porch. If a train comes through, you’ll have the best seat in the house. If it doesn’t, the afternoon is still yours to enjoy.
